Training in Shirudo Jiu Jitsu:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes technique and leverage over strength, allowing smaller practitioners to control and submit larger opponents.

Techniques used: BJJ techniques include joint locks, chokes, and positional control manoeuvres such as guard, mount, and side control.

What to expect in a training session at shirudo Jiu Jitsu: Training involves drilling techniques, live rolling (sparring), and situational drills. BJJ practitioners often train in a gi (uniform), though no-gi training is also used at SHIRUDO.

Competitions: Shirudo BJJ practitioners usually have a very competitive nature, their are many local, state and national competitions SHIRUDO competes in which are are typically conducted on mats, with points awarded for achieving superior positions and submissions determining the winner. Note:(It’s not mandatory to compete — it is completely optional)

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU ORIGINS

Origins: Developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil, BJJ evolved from traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo techniques.

  • When Japanese teachers travelled the world and spread their various fighting styles it was not uncommon for newer forms to emerge.
  • Jiu Jitsu is credited with developing from Kodokan Judo or Newaza. Because of the innovative style it has become well known as BJJ with it’s own unique fighting form
  • It is a fighting style founded on the belief that a smaller person can defend against a larger opponent.
  • A lot of Jiu Jitsu is ground fighting and positioning manoeuvres.
  • It is an ideal self-defence form for anyone, especially women and children when dealing with a larger, stronger opponent Jiu Jitsu neutralises a lot of their strength.
  • Jiu Jitsu often focuses on takedowns without the use of striking.
  • Primarily developed for self-defence, many have now come to enjoy it as a sport through competitions.
  • Like most martial arts forms, Jiu Jitsu is a mentality and a way of life incorporating physical movement. Focusing on control and careful manoeuvres rather than just brute strength.
