SHIRUDO Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a specialized form of  Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) that focuses on self-defense, competition, and functional fitness. The term “Shirudo” means “shield” in Japanese, representing the protective and defensive elements central to its approach. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known for its emphasis on ground fighting and grappling techniques, designed to neutralize opponents through leverage, joint locks, and chokeholds, making it ideal for practitioners of all sizes.

At SHIRUDO Martial Arts Academy, the Jiu Jitsu curriculum combines traditional BJJ techniques with self-defense tactics, prioritizing practical skills that can be applied in real-life scenarios. The art emphasizes using technique over strength, making it effective for individuals of varying physical abilities, including those with special needs, by focusing on body mechanics and control.

Key Aspects of SHIRUDO Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  1. Ground Fighting: Unlike many other martial arts that focus on striking (kicks and punches), BJJ prioritizes ground control and techniques to outmaneuver opponents.
  2. Leverage Over Strength: BJJ is designed to help smaller, weaker individuals defend themselves against larger, stronger opponents using leverage and proper technique.
  3. Submissions: Practitioners aim to submit their opponents using techniques like armlocks, leglocks, and chokes. This allows for a safe and controlled way to end fights without serious injury.
  4. Positioning: Mastery of positional control, such as guard, mount, and side control, is crucial in BJJ. It enables practitioners to maintain a dominant position while setting up submissions or escapes.
  5. Self-Defense: SHIRUDO Jui Jitsu is effective for real-world self-defense situations, particularly when an altercation ends up on the ground.

In competition settings, Shirudo  Jiu-Jitsu follows standard BJJ rules, emphasizing point-based systems in Gi and No-Gi tournaments. Its training can be applied to various competitions like the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) and Grappling Industries, among others.

Origins:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated in the early 20th century in Brazil when Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, taught his techniques to the Gracie family. The Gracies, particularly Helio Gracie, adapted Judo’s ground techniques to create what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, emphasizing grappling and submissions rather than throws and standing techniques.

Today, BJJ is practiced both as a form of self-defense and as a sport, with competitions worldwide, including prestigious organizations like the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). It has become a fundamental discipline in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) due to its effectiveness in one-on-one combat.
